What is Two-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Last Updated 4 months ago

Two-factor verification is a more secure method to authenticate a user's identity and ensure secure access to company accounts, social networks, or an email address.

Why is it important?

Two-factor authentication or verification is a system that adds an additional level of security to the online account access process, which already requires the user to identify themselves in two different ways.

The first is generally a password.

The second form can be chosen from various methods, such as SMS or a numerical security code.

The theory behind two-factor verification is that, to log into your account, the unique verification of your identity is linked to "knowing something" and "having something."

In general, there are three different ways to enable two-factor authentication:

  • Via SMS: It is the most common method, as it has been around for a long time. At the same time, it is also the least secure, considering the outdated technologies used.
  • Through dedicated applications or hardware: They generate a disposable verification code valid for about 30 seconds. On the mobile phone with a dedicated authentication app. Some of the well-known apps include Microsoft Authenticator and Google Authenticator.
  • Through new security keys: A new type of key has recently been created, based on the security standard FIDO U2F, ensuring compliance with the highest levels of security.
